Amazon FBA Packaging Requirements 2025 — Carton Strength, Poly Bag Specs, Suffocation Warnings, and Pallet Rules Every China Importer Must Follow

28% of China-sourced FBA shipments fail Amazon's packaging audit — a single poly bag violation rejects the entire shipment

One $169 pre-shipment inspection with a packaging module saves $1,850 in average rejection costs and 14 days of delay

Why Packaging Rejections Cost More Than Product Defects

A product quality defect is caught at inspection and fixed before shipping. A packaging violation is caught by Amazon at the inbound dock — after you already paid for freight. The result: $350-$500 return-to-sender fee, 7-14 days of delay, and missed sales during the peak selling window. CloudSpects analyzed 340 FBA inbound rejections across 2024-2025 to identify exactly which packaging rules China importers most frequently violate.

Key finding: 28% of China-sourced FBA shipments had at least one packaging violation. The most common violations were: poly bag thickness below 1.5 mil (41%), missing suffocation warning (27%), and carton weight exceeding 50 lb (19%).

1. Carton Strength and Weight Limits

Amazon's carton requirements are specific and non-negotiable. Chinese factories often use single-wall corrugated cartons that are too weak for international shipping or pack cartons past the weight limit.

✓ Maximum weight: 50 lb (22.7 kg) per individual carton. Any carton over 50 lb must be marked "Team Lift" on 2 opposite sides.

✓ Cartons over 100 lb (45 kg) are prohibited entirely — Amazon will reject the pallet.

✓ Carton size: longest side must be ≤25 inches (63.5 cm). Exception for oversize items (must be labeled as "oversize" in advance).

✓ Corrugated strength: minimum 32 ECT (edge crush test) for standard shipments. Heavy items need 44 ECT or double-wall construction.

✓ Tape closure: minimum 3 strips of 2-inch clear packing tape — center seam plus both edges. No string, rope, or stretch wrap as primary closure.

Real case: A Guangzhou-based electronics seller packed 120 Bluetooth speakers per carton in single-wall boxes. CloudSpects inspector caught the 54 lb cartons — 4 lb over the limit with no "Team Lift" label. The seller repacked into 100 units per carton (45 lb), saving an estimated $1,200 in potential rejection fees.

2. Poly Bag Specifications

Poly bags are the #1 cause of packaging rejection for textile and apparel FBA shipments. Most factories use standard cheap poly bags that do not meet Amazon's minimum requirements.

✓ Minimum thickness: 1.5 mil (0.0015 inches). CloudSpects inspectors carry a micrometer to verify. 82% of Chinese factory poly bags CloudSpects tested are 1.0-1.2 mil — below spec.

✓ Perforation requirement: poly bags must have ≥2 perforation holes of at least 0.25 inch diameter each if the bag opening is ≥5 inches.

✓ Opening measurement: inspector measures the bag opening flat — width across the open end. If >5 inches, suffocation warning is mandatory and perforations are required.

✓ No tape covering — the FNSKU label must be on the outside surface of the poly bag, not covered by tape, shrink wrap, or the product's hang tag.

3. Suffocation Warning Labels

If your product is packaged in a poly bag with an opening wider than 5 inches, you must have a suffocation warning. This is the #2 cause of packaging rejections.

✓ Warning text must read: "WARNING: To avoid danger of suffocation, keep this plastic bag away from babies and children. Do not use this bag in cribs, beds, carriages, or playpens. This bag is not a toy."

✓ Warning must be printed in English. Chinese-only warnings are not accepted by Amazon US.

✓ Warning must be visible through the bag — either printed directly on the bag or on a label visible from outside.

✓ Combined bags: if multiple units are bundled inside one poly bag, the outer bag needs the warning. 14% of multi-unit bundles CloudSpects inspected failed on this rule.

4. Carton Labeling Requirements

Every carton in an FBA shipment needs specific labels in specific positions. Chinese factories frequently apply labels incorrectly.

FBA box ID label. One per carton. Must be on a clean, flat surface — never over a seam, edge, or tape. Label must be fully scannable (Amazon's scanners reject labels with creases, wrinkles, or peel-back corners).

"Made in China" marking. Required on each carton, not just the pallet label. Must be permanent — printed or affixed with adhesive that does not peel during transit. 33% of China FBA shipments CloudSpects inspected had carton-level origin marking missing.

"This Side Up" arrows. For fragile, liquid, or directional-sensitive products. Must be on 2 adjacent sides of the carton, not just one.

Team Lift label. Required on cartons 50-100 lb. Must be visible on 2 opposite sides. CloudSpects found 41% of qualifying cartons did not have the label.

Mixed SKU cartons. If a carton contains multiple SKUs, it must be clearly labeled "Mixed SKU" on the FBA box ID label. 18% of mixed-SKU cartons CloudSpects audited lacked this marking.

5. Pallet Requirements

For full-pallet FBA shipments (LTL/FTL), Amazon has strict pallet rules that Chinese factories often overlook.

✓ Pallet type: Standard GMA-grade wood pallet, 40 in × 48 in. No broken boards, protruding nails, or splinters.

✓ Maximum height: 72 inches (including pallet). Maximum weight: 1,500 lb per pallet.

✓ Stretch wrap: 3-4 layers minimum. No gaps. The bottom 3 inches of the pallet must be left unwrapped for forklift access.

✓ No overhang — cartons must not extend past the pallet edge. 1 inch of overhang triggers pallet rejection.

✓ Pallet label: one FBA pallet label per pallet, placed on 2 adjacent sides.

6. Special Packaging by Product Category

Apparel. Each garment in a poly bag. Hang tags must point downward or be removed. 19% of apparel FBA rejections involve hang tags damaging the poly bag during transit.

Electronics. Anti-static bags (≥4 mil conductive) for components. No loose batteries. Retail packaging must survive 3-foot drop test without opening.

Liquids. Double-bagged with absorbent material. Leak-proof cap seal required. Amazon requires 100% of liquid units to pass an inverted seal test.

Glass/Fragile. Minimum 2 inches of cushioning material on all sides. Individually boxed within the master carton. "Fragile" label on 3 sides.

7. Pre-Shipment Inspection Packaging Checklist

A standard pre-shipment inspection should include a dedicated packaging module that checks all the rules above. Most inspection companies in China do not — they focus on product quality and skip packaging entirely.

Cost comparison: A packaging-only audit costs $100-$150. A full pre-shipment inspection with packaging module costs $169 (CloudSpects rate). The average FBA packaging rejection costs $1,850 — the inspection pays for itself 11 times over.

How CloudSpects Prevents Packaging Rejections

Every CloudSpects pre-shipment inspection includes a dedicated packaging module covering all 7 categories above — poly bag thickness testing with micrometer, suffocation warning verification, FBA box ID scannability, carton weight and ECT certification, carton label placement, pallet specification check, and category-specific packaging rules.

Our inspectors carry calibrated micrometers, barcode verifiers, and digital scales on every visit. Reports delivered in 24-48 hours with photo evidence of every packaging check point.

At CloudSpects, we serve importers across all major Chinese manufacturing cities with inspections starting at $169 per man-day.
