Why Labels Matter More Than Product Quality at the Amazon Inbound Dock
You spent months developing your product. You paid for tooling, sourced materials, and ran a full pre-shipment inspection. The product quality is flawless. Then your FBA shipment arrives at the Amazon fulfillment center — and gets rejected because the FNSKU label is covered by packing tape.
Data point: CloudSpects analyzed 420 FBA inbound shipment rejections across 2024–2025. The #1 cause was labeling errors (47%), far ahead of product quality defects (23%), packaging damage (18%), and quantity discrepancies (12%).
This post covers every label requirement your factory must get right — FNSKU, ASIN, country of origin, suffocation warnings, and Amazon-specific labeling for apparel, electronics, and consumables.
The Five Labels Every FBA Unit Needs
1. FNSKU Label (Mandatory, No Exceptions)
FNSKU (Fulfillment Network Stock Keeping Unit) is the barcode Amazon uses to track your inventory. It is unique per ASIN and per condition (new, used, etc.). The label must be scannable — not covered by tape, shrink wrap, or poly bag seams.
✓ Label size: 2.25" x 1.25" minimum (Amazon standard thermal label)
✓ White label with black ink — no colored backgrounds or glossy finishes
✓ Place on the flat surface of the product — not on a seam, curve, or edge
✓ Remove or cover any existing UPC/EAN barcode underneath — Amazon scanners read the wrong code and miscount inventory
✓ Verify in pre-shipment inspection: inspector scans 30 labels per SKU with a barcode verifier
2. Country of Origin Label
Every product imported into the US must display "Made in China" or "Product of China" in a conspicuous, permanent location. This is a US Customs requirement, not an Amazon requirement — but Amazon enforces it at the inbound dock.
Common violation: 34% of FBA shipments CloudSpects inspected had "Made in China" on the outer carton only, not on individual units. Amazon rejects the entire pallet when unit-level labels are missing — costing $350–$500 in return-to-sender fees.
The label must be affixed — a hang tag is acceptable only if securely attached. Stickers that peel off easily are a fail. Embossing or debossing on the product itself also qualifies.
3. Suffocation Warning (Poly Bags)
Any product packaged in a poly bag with an opening larger than 5 inches (measured flat) must have a suffocation warning label. The label must be visible through the bag and include the standard warning text and symbol.
4. MSDS / Product Safety Label
Lithium batteries, chemicals, and certain electronics require additional labeling per Amazon's FBA Dangerous Goods policy. A pre-shipment inspector should verify that the safety label language matches Amazon's ASIN-specific requirements.
5. Expiration Date (Consumables Only)
Products with expiration dates (food, supplements, cosmetics) must show the date in MM-DD-YYYY or MM-YYYY format, in English. The date must be printed, not hand-stamped. CloudSpects inspectors verify that remaining shelf life is ≥ 90 days upon arrival.
Carton-Level Labels
Box labels are separate from unit labels. Each carton in an FBA shipment must have:
✓ Amazon FBA box ID label — one per carton, never covered by tape
✓ "Made in China" on the carton (if Chinese factory packs them)
✓ Team Lift label if individual carton weight exceeds 50 lb
✓ "This Side Up" arrows for fragile electronics or glass products
✓ Arrow labels on two adjacent sides, not just one
What Your Pre-Shipment Inspector Should Check for Labels
Many pre-shipment inspection companies skip label verification — they treat it as "packaging only." CloudSpects treats labeling as a separate checklist item with dedicated sampling:
✓ Scannability test — scan 30 FNSKU labels per SKU with a barcode verifier
✓ Adhesion test — apply and remove label 3 times; should not peel or leave residue
✓ Placement audit — label position, absence of tape covering, no folded or wrinkled labels
✓ UPC masking — confirm manufacturer barcode is blacked out or covered
✓ Country of origin — check 100% of unit samples; 1 missed unit = pallet rejection
✓ Poly bag warning — if applicable, verify proper label and placement
The True Cost of a Label Error
$1,850 average total cost per label-related FBA rejection, broken down: $350–$500 return-to-sender fee, $200 factory re-labeling, $200 re-shipment, 7–14 days of lost sales at $50–$100/day potential revenue.
