The Eight Checks Before a Coat Rack Ships ⚙️

1. Hook load. Each hook takes five kilogrammes static, held long enough to show creep, then thirty pull-and-release cycles. We test the top hooks first, because that is where the weight goes.

2. Hub and joint integrity. The hub is assembled and disassembled three times. We cut one hub per batch to check material and wall thickness at the hook root, which is where the crack always starts.

3. Tip-over stability. The unit is loaded on the upper hooks and pushed at adult and child height, on carpet and on hard floor. If the specification promises an anti-tip strap or wall anchor, the box must contain it, and its absence is classified as critical.

4. Base and floor contact. Leg splay, feet material, wobble on a flat reference plate, and whether the base is heavy enough for the pole height.

5. Material and finish. Powder-coat or paint adhesion with a cross-hatch and tape pull, edge coverage where hooks meet the pole, and moisture content on any MDF or solid-wood parts — above 12% is a humidity problem waiting for a container.

6. Hardware and instructions. Open-count every bag against the instruction sheet, weigh a complete kit against its printed weight, and confirm the fittings actually fit the parts they are meant to join. Self-assembly failures are the single most common one-star complaint in this category.

7. Packing for a long, thin product. End caps and internal supports so the pole cannot flex, the hardware bag fixed in place rather than loose, corner or edge drop on a loaded carton, and carton weight verified against the shipping mark. 8. Labels and identity. Model and colour code matching the PO, FNSKU on every carton, country of origin, and care or assembly warnings in English where they are required.

Why This Category Fails in Q4 🎯

Coat racks and hall trees sell hardest between October and December, which means the containers that matter are produced in the same window as every other Q4 order. Three things happen in that rush. First, finish quality drops: coating thickness falls, edge coverage thins, and a rack that looked matt black on the sample arrives with visible spray shadow. Second, hardware counting gets delegated to whoever is available, and short kits are the result. Third, packaging is compressed to fit more cartons per container, which is exactly when end protection disappears and poles arrive bent.

An importer ordered 3,400 hall trees with bench and back panel at FOB $22.60 per unit, $76,840, for a November launch. The factory's own sample was solid: three coats on the top hooks, no wobble, hardware bag complete. AQL 2.5 Level II meant 200 units, drawn from sealed cartons across the finished-goods pallets.

The findings were specific. Fifteen of sixty units tested showed a hub crack or thread stripping when a hook was assembled for the second time — the hub wall measured 2.1 mm against the approved sample's 3.0 mm, and the mould had been changed to a two-cavity tool mid-run. Twenty-two units wobbled more than 3 mm on a flat plate because the leg splay was uneven by 4 to 6 degrees, which also meant the base was carrying load on two legs instead of three. Nine cartons were missing the anti-tip strap that the specification and the marketplace listing both promised — classified critical. Twenty-seven kits were short one cam lock or one dowel. Six cartons showed crushed pole ends where the end support had been dropped to save carton cost.
