Step 1: Wood boards — moisture and food-safe finish
We check moisture content on sampled boards with a pin meter — 6-9% is the range we want to see; boards over 12% will check and crack as they dry in a heated home. ✅ We also look for end-grain cracks, knots that fall out, and bow or twist on a flat surface (warp over 2mm diagonally fails).
The finish is the food-safety story. We XRF-screen the coating on food-contact surfaces for lead and heavy metals, verify any "food-safe" or "FDA" claim against a certificate the factory can show, and confirm the finish is a cured food-safe oil or varnish — not a spray lacquer that softens in contact with oil. ⚠️ We also check that no paint or stain touches the food surface.
Step 2: Marble, ceramic and metal trays
Marble trays get the same treatment as marble countertops: hairline cracks checked under light, chip inspection on edges and corners, and ΔE veining comparison against the master sample — marble is natural, but shade drift between batches still gets flagged. ❌ Ceramic trays get a glaze check: pinholes, crazing (we use an ink dye test), and a thermal-shock test for pieces that carry hot food.
We also check the base of each marble tray for grinding marks and uneven thickness — a tray that rocks on a table fails even if the top looks perfect.
Metal trays — brass, iron or stainless — get a coating check: ISO 2409 cross-hatch adhesion on painted surfaces, a 24-hour salt-spray pass on plated finishes where the listing claims rust resistance, and a check for sharp edges on rolled rims. 💰
Step 3: Acrylic trays — clarity and warp
Acrylic trays fail on three things: haze, scratches and warp. We hold samples to a light source to check clarity, inspect for mold-release marks and scuffs, and lay each tray on a flat surface to check bowing — a warped acrylic tray rocks on a table and reads as cheap.
We also measure thickness consistency with a caliper — a tray that's 5mm at one edge and 4.2mm at the other looks warped even when it isn't.
We also check edge polish — rough edges catch fingers and fail — and note yellowing tendency on a UV light-box check where the listing claims crystal clarity. ✅
Step 4: Hardware, feet and FBA readiness
Trays with handles or feet get a pull test — 4kgf on handles, 6kgf on feet — and we set each tray on a flat surface to check for wobble. For FBA: the FNSKU label must scan, poly bags need the warning label, and each tray should be wrapped or interleaved so surfaces don't rub in transit. ❌ A tray that slides against its neighbor for 30 days of sea freight arrives scuffed.

Real inspection: Fujian acacia wood order
A home decor seller ordered 5,000 acacia serving boards and 2,000 marble trays from a Fujian factory — order value $31,500.
