Step 1: Wear layer and surface

We measure the wear layer on every sampled plank. For engineered hardwood that means the real wood veneer thickness — 2mm on the standard line, 4mm on premium — checked with a caliper at the plank edge. ❌ A common bait-switch is printed wood-look film on a thin veneer: it photographs fine and wears through in a year.

For laminate we verify the AC rating — AC3 for bedrooms, AC4 for living areas, AC5 for commercial — by checking the top-layer spec against the listing and running a scratch test on samples. ✅ A laminate that claims AC4 should survive a 20-cycle abrasion check without exposing the decor layer.

We also check the surface finish itself — gloss consistency across planks, and any bevel or micro-bevel edge that should be uniform. A bevel that varies by more than 0.5mm catches light and looks wrong in a finished room.

Step 2: Moisture content and core

We check moisture with a pin moisture meter across sampled planks and across cartons from different production days. ⚠️ Engineered hardwood should sit at 6-9% moisture — the equilibrium range for most US markets. Planks over 12% are a warp claim waiting to happen.

The core matters as much as the face. Laminate uses HDF board, so we check density by weight and dimension — a low-density core crumbles at the click-lock under foot traffic. Engineered hardwood cores are plywood or MDF; we check for glue voids, press the face to find hollow spots, and verify the formaldehyde certificate (CARB or TSCA Title VI) matches the box.

Step 3: Click-lock and dimensions

We cycle every sampled plank's click-lock 10 times — engage, disengage, re-engage — and check the seam gap with a feeler gauge. A lock that loosens after cycling fails. ✅ We also measure width, thickness and squareness: width tolerance of ±0.15mm keeps seams tight across cartons.

We also verify the plank count and footage per carton against the spec — under-filled cartons are a quiet margin grab that surfaces as shortage claims at install time.

Step 4: Shade matching and VOC

VOC checks matter for indoor-air claims: we verify CARB ATCM Phase 2 or TSCA Title VI labels on the carton match the product, and note any formaldehyde test reports the factory can show. For FBA: cartons need the FNSKU label, and we confirm the pallet stack is stable with a moisture barrier for sea freight. 💰

Cartons should also carry the product code, thickness and shade-lot marking, because mixing lots in one container is how shade claims start.

AQL sampling for flooring shipments

Flooring runs two sampling levels at once — AQL 1.0 for structure (core, click-lock, moisture) and AQL 2.5 for surface. For a lot of 3,201-10,000 planks, the aql 2.5 sample size at General Inspection Level II is 200 pieces (code L), with no more than 10 major defects to pass.
