Step 1: Verify Wire Gauge — The Most Common Bait-and-Switch
The highest-cost component in a power cord is the copper wire. Chinese factories commonly print 14 AWG on the jacket but use 16 AWG or even 18 AWG copper. Our inspectors:
- ✅ Cut a 10 cm sample from 3 different production cartons per inspection
- ✅ Strip the insulation and measure bare copper diameter with a digital micrometer
- ✅ Calculate actual AWG against ASTM B258 standard (14 AWG = 1.628 mm, 16 AWG = 1.291 mm)
- ✅ Check for copper-clad aluminum (CCA) — CCA looks like copper but carries 61% less current. A magnet test does NOT catch CCA. Scrape the conductor: aluminum is white underneath. Resistivity meter measurement is definitive.
⚠️ At least 40% of power cords from Shenzhen factories tested by our inspectors show wire gauge at least one AWG undersized. This is the single most important check.
Step 2: Overload Protection Test
Every power strip and fused extension cord needs overload protection. Our inspectors perform:

- ✅ Socket contact retention: Plug must require 0.5-2.5 kg of force to insert and remove (per UL 1363)
- ✅ Socket shutter (child safety): Must require simultaneous dual-prong insertion to open — no single-prong access
❌ EU importers note: Chinese factories often mix CEE 7/4 (Schuko/EU) and CEE 7/7 configurations. Check that the plug matches your target market exactly. CE EN 60884-1 compliance includes plug dimension verification.
Step 4: Surge Protection Verification (for surge-protected strips)
If your product claims surge protection (Joules rating, clamping voltage), our inspectors verify:
- ✅ MOV (Metal Oxide Varistor) presence: Open the strip housing and visually confirm MOV components are populated on the PCB
- ✅ MOV rating match: Compare the MOV disc diameter and voltage rating against the claimed specs
- ✅ Clamping voltage test: Apply a 600V surge (8/20 µs waveform) and verify clamping voltage is below UL 1449 limits (330V for 120V ratings, 500V for 240V)
- ✅ UL 1449 certification: Check the UL file number on UL.com's online database. Many Shenzhen strips print the UL logo without actual certification
Step 5: Cord and Strain Relief Stress Test
The point where the cord enters the plug or strip body is the most stressed point. Our inspectors apply:
