FBA Carton Stacking and Palletization — 5 Rules That Prevent Warehouse Rejection and Safety Violations
Most FBA importers focus on product quality and forget that Amazon also inspects the pallet
23% of FBA LTL/FTL shipments get flagged at the inbound dock for pallet-level violations

The Hidden Pallet Problem
Every FBA shipment that arrives via LTL (less-than-truckload) or FTL (full truckload) does so on pallets. Amazon receiving team inspects the pallet before it even enters the fulfillment center. If the pallet itself fails — wrong dimensions, unstable stacking, insufficient stretch wrap, incorrect labeling — the entire shipment can be rejected, even if every individual product inside is perfect.
Data point: CloudSpects reviewed 340 FBA inbound rejections from 2024–2025. Of the rejections not related to product compliance, 23% were caused by pallet-level issues — stacking, wrapping, label placement, or weight distribution. The average cost to re-palletize and re-schedule a rejected FBA inbound delivery: $850–$1,200.
This post covers the 5 rules for FBA pallet compliance that every importer should include in their pre-shipment inspection checklist.
Rule 1: Pallet Dimensions — The 48x40 GMA Standard
Amazon FBA requires all pallets to conform to the GMA (Grocery Manufacturers Association) standard: 48 inches x 40 inches (approximately 121.9 cm x 101.6 cm). Non-standard pallet sizes are rejected at the inbound dock.
✓ Pallet type: GMA B or better (not Euro pallets, not CHEP-only pallets unless arranged)
✓ Condition: no broken boards, no protruding nails, no splintered edges
✓ Load capacity: minimum 2,800 lb dynamic load rating
✓ No pallets with visible moisture damage or mold — this is an immediate rejection
The inspector should verify pallet dimensions with a tape measure (3 pallets minimum from the shipment). A surprising number of Chinese factories use slightly smaller or larger pallets because their local pallet supplier cuts to a different standard. The tolerance is ±0.5 inches — anything outside that range is a fail.
Rule 2: Carton-to-Pallet Layout — No Overhang, Even Stacking
Cartons on an FBA pallet must not overhang the pallet edges. Overhanging cartons get crushed by the next pallet stacked above them, and they interfere with automated pallet handling equipment.
The inspector checks:
✓ Cartons are arranged in a stable interlocking pattern (not a single column)
✓ No carton extends beyond the pallet edge at any point
✓ Carton edges are aligned: gap between cartons ≤ 1 inch
✓ 2 inches minimum gap between the carton column and the trailer wall when loaded (for fork access)
Chinese factories often stack cartons in a single column because it is faster. This creates an unstable pallet that may collapse during transport. The inspector should perform a stability push test: apply 5 kg of lateral force at the top of the stack.
Rule 3: Stacking Height and Weight Limits
Amazon enforces three hard limits on pallet stacking:
1. Maximum pallet height: 72 inches (183 cm). This includes the height of the pallet itself. 15% of shipments CloudSpects audited from Chinese factories exceeded this — usually because workers stacked one extra layer. The inspector must measure from the floor to the highest point of the top carton.
2. Maximum pallet weight: 1,500 lb (680 kg). Both the pallet and the forklift have limits. A pallet loaded with heavy products can easily exceed this. The inspector should weigh 3 pallets with a pallet jack scale.
3. Individual carton weight: 50 lb (22.7 kg) maximum. Cartons over 50 lb require Team Lift labeling. The inspector weighs 10 cartons per SKU.
Rule 4: Stretch Wrap Requirements — The 3-2-1 Rule
✓ 3 layers of stretch wrap at the top of the pallet
✓ 2 layers on the middle body of the pallet
✓ 1 layer at the bottom, wrapping over the pallet edge
Rule 5: Pallet Label Placement — The Golden Triangle
All primary labels must be placed within the golden triangle — the upper-right quadrant of the narrow 40-inch pallet face. Labels under wrap cannot be scanned by Amazon equipment.
Cost of Pallet Rejection
$700–$1,150 total — Minimum direct cost per rejected pallet, plus opportunity cost of 3–7 days of lost sales.
