Tiles that don't lay flat, edges that chip during installation, and batch-to-batch size drift are the top three reasons importers end up with rejected tile shipments. For large-format tiles (600×600mm and above), these defects compound — a 2mm height difference on an 800mm tile produces a visible lipping issue across an entire floor. Here's what every tile importer should check before shipment.

Step 1: Measure Size Tolerance on Rectified vs Non-Rectified Tiles

Rectified tiles have precision-ground edges so dimensions stay within ±0.5mm across the entire batch. Non-rectified tiles typically allow ±1.0mm. Using a digital caliper, measure at least 10 tiles per AQL sample across length, width, and diagonal. For rectified 800×800mm tiles from Foshan, our inspection standard is: any tile outside ±0.5mm of the declared dimension fails. In a recent 8,000m² shipment from Foshan, 6% of rectified tiles fell outside the ±0.5mm spec — the factory re-calibrated their rectification line and re-sorted the batch.

Step 2: Flatness & Warpage Test

Place the tile face-up on a certified flat granite surface. Measure corner lift with a feeler gauge at all four corners and the center. Per ISO 10545-2, for an 800×800mm tile (diagonal ~1,130mm), the maximum allowable warpage is 0.5% — about 5.6mm. For premium commercial projects, we recommend ≤0.3% (3.4mm). During recent testing on 1,200×600mm porcelain tiles, 11% exceeded the 0.5% warpage spec at the corner-lift test — these would have caused visible lipping in a continuous floor installation, resulting in an estimated $22,000 in reinstallation costs for the importer.

Step 3: Edge Chipping & Rectification Quality

Inspect cut edges under good light (at least 500 lux). Micro-chips under 0.5mm wide are acceptable for most commercial applications. For rectified tiles, lay two tiles edge-to-edge and check the seam gap — it should feel uniform along the full length, with no more than 0.2mm variation. Glazed rectified edges also need inspection: the glaze should completely cover the cut edge with no bare bisque showing. Chipped edges cause installation delays (tile setters spend extra time sorting), weakened seams, and visible joint defects.

Step 4: Thickness Consistency Across the Batch

Large-format tiles from Chinese kilns can have up to 1mm thickness variation within a single tile (center thicker than edges), and 1.5mm batch-to-batch. Use a dial thickness gauge at 5 points per tile (4 corners + center). The standard: ±0.5mm from nominal within a single tile, ±1.0mm across the batch. Variations over 1mm cause lipping issues where the thick edge of one tile meets the thin edge of the next.

Step 5: Packaging for Export — Protecting Large Formats

Tiles 600×600mm and above need edge protectors (L-corners) at every corner, interleaving paper layers between each tile face, and vertical wooden crating for sea freight. Every crate should have a moisture barrier — condensation inside shipping containers from China to US West Coast (14-18 days transit) can cause edge staining even on fully vitrified porcelain. A crate hold-down strap test ensures tiles don't shift during handling.

Inspection date: June 2026. Client: US tile distributor ordering 12,000m² of rectified 800×800mm porcelain tiles from a Foshan factory. AQL Level II, normal severity. Sample size: 315 tiles. Findings: 8% had edge chipping beyond the ±0.5mm calibration tolerance on one side, and 5% showed warpage at 0.6-0.7% (above the 0.5% spec). Total defective cartons flagged: ~960m².
