Panel alignment and frame integrity

The panels have to be flat to within a few millimetres across their length, and their dimensions have to match each other, because a screen is judged as a set. We measure panel height and width across the lot, check bow and twist on a flat surface, and confirm that edges are straight and sealed. On painted or stained frames we look for overspray, thin coverage at edges and sand-through marks, which are the first places a finish fails in a humid room.

Then the joints. A hinge or connector gets cycled open and closed repeatedly, with the panel held by its outer edge rather than the frame, which loads the joint the way a real user does. Loose plates, spinning rivets, screws that strip on assembly and connectors that stop holding at a set angle all show up within a few dozen cycles. Gaps between panels at the closed position should stay even and consistent, not pinch at one end. 🔧

Stability, feet and tip-over risk

A screen that stands in the factory is not the same as a screen that stands in a carpeted room with a person leaning on it. We set the unit fully open on a level surface, push lightly at the top edge in both directions, then repeat at the folded angles a customer will actually use. Panels that swing past their intended stop or feet that lift off the floor are defects, not quirks.

We also check what holds the unit in place — non-slip pads, the geometry of the foot section, and whether a wall anchor or anti-tip strap is called for and actually in the carton. Missing safety hardware on a tall screen is one of the few defects we class as critical, because the consequence is a unit falling on a person.

Panel covering, print and colour

Panel coverings get a peel test at corners and edges, where lifting begins. Bubbles, wrinkles, glue bleed and staples or tacks left proud of the surface all fail. On printed designs we stand the panels side by side and check that the motif continues across the joins rather than jumping, and we compare the whole run against the approved sample under the same lighting — colour drift between production batches is one of the most common sources of returns, and it is invisible when you look at a single panel alone.

Dark panels get a rub test for crocking, and moisture content is measured before packing: 12% or lower on wood-based panels, with the batch held above 14%. Screens packed damp show mildew after a month at sea. 🌿

Packing a long carton properly

Long, thin cartons are the most common cause of damage we see on this product. We check corner protectors and end caps, internal fit so panels cannot slide, and that the hardware bag is secured rather than loose inside the carton where hinges can grind against a panel face for weeks. Then a 60 cm carton drop on a corner and an edge, with the unit inspected afterwards, tells you more about the packaging than any photo of the carton stack.

An importer ordered 3,600 six-panel folding screens at $13 per unit, a $46,800 production order. Production passed the factory's own visual check and the container was booked for 9 days later.

Our pre-shipment inspection pulled 200 units from sealed cartons across all pallets. Re-inspection passed at 1.2% majors. Had the batch shipped, the same 9% joint failure would have put more than 300 loose, leaning screens into customer homes, where returns cost more than the product and the review damage stays on the listing.
