These are the most common QC failures in mirror imports from China — and they're all preventable with the right inspection checks. Here's what to verify before your mirror containers leave the factory.

Step 1: Silvering Quality & Edge Seal Inspection

The most critical check. Flip the mirror and inspect the silvered surface under bright light (500+ lux). Look for pinholes, scratch lines, orange-peel texture, or uneven coverage. Mirror-grade glass should have full, uniform silver coverage. Check the edge seal — a moisture-barrier tape (typically copper or epoxy-based) should cover at least 3mm from the edge. Without proper edge sealing, humidity from a bathroom or coastal shipping container creeps under the silver layer and causes black edge corrosion within 3-6 months. In a recent 2,000-unit bathroom mirror inspection from Guangdong, 12% showed silvering pinholes visible after 3-month accelerated humidity testing at 40°C / 85% RH — the mirrors were reworked before shipment, avoiding an estimated $9,600 in replacement claims.

Step 2: Beveled Edge QC

Beveled edges are the most fragile part of a decorative mirror. Check three things: (1) Bevel width — measure with a caliper across 4 sides of each sample; tolerance should be ±0.5mm. (2) Edge smoothness — run a soft cloth along the bevel; any snag indicates a burr or chip that will cut during cleaning. (3) Uniform pitch — the bevel angle shouldn't shift more than 1° along any edge. For mirrors with polished flat edges (not beveled), check that the pencil edge or flat polish is continuous with no flat spots.

Step 3: Mirror & Frame Assembly

For framed mirrors: check corner joints of wood, MDF, or metal frames. Corner joint pull test: apply 4kgf (39N) diagonally — any gap opening >0.5mm is a fail. Hanging hardware (D-rings, sawtooth hangers, or wire) must be rated for at least 2× the mirror's weight. Mirror-to-frame adhesive should be continuous around the perimeter — spot gluing causes the mirror to separate in temperature changes. Check that the mirror sits flat in the frame with no pressure points that can cause stress fractures.

Step 4: Fogging / Anti-Fog Treatment Verification

If the mirror claims anti-fog treatment (common for bathroom mirrors), verify it. Simple test: breathe on the mirror surface for 3 seconds. An anti-fog treated mirror should show minimal condensation that clears within 5 seconds. Untreated mirrors fog up for 15-30 seconds. For premium mirrors, verify the treatment is applied on both sides — some Guangdong factories only treat the visible face, leaving the edges untreated where fog wicking occurs first.

Step 5: Export Packaging

Mirror packaging from Chinese factories often fails on arrival. Check: (1) L-shaped corner protectors on all 4 corners (cardboard or foam, minimum 3mm thick). (2) Foam interleaving between stacked mirrors — at least 5mm EPE foam not just paper. (3) Mirror surface protected with PE film (not adhesive tape — tape residue damages the silvering when removed). (4) Crating orientation: mirrors must ship vertically, never flat-packed in containers. Horizontal stacking in a shipping container causes glass sag and breakage.
