Inspection timing comparison

PSI vs DPI: pick the right China inspection before goods leave the factory.

Pre-shipment inspection (PSI) and during production inspection (DPI) solve different risks. Use this page to decide timing, budget, and whether Amazon FBA sellers should book one visit or both.

Direct answer

DPI catches process and early-lot defects while the factory can still rework. PSI verifies finished quality, quantity, packing, and labeling before release or loading. For first orders with a new supplier, book DPI mid-run and PSI before shipment. For stable repeat SKUs, PSI alone is often enough if you still verify FBA labels, carton marks, and packaging rules.

Side-by-side comparison

During Production (DPI)

Timing: typically 20–80% complete. Goal: stop systemic defects early (wrong materials, process drift, assembly errors). Best for new factories, complex products, and large runs.

Pre-Shipment (PSI)

Timing: usually ≥80% finished and packed. Goal: AQL sampling on finished goods, quantity, workmanship, packaging, labels. Best gate before final payment, forwarder pickup, or container loading.

What DPI does not replace

DPI cannot certify the final packed lot. Labels, FNSKU placement, carton weight, and late packing defects still need PSI or a dedicated packing check.

What PSI does not replace

If the whole line is running a bad process, PSI may reject a finished lot that DPI could have corrected cheaper mid-production.

Decision checklist

  • New factory or first PO → DPI + PSI.
  • Electronics / softlines with high return risk → DPI + PSI.
  • Repeat SKU, trusted factory, stable QC history → PSI focus.
  • Amazon FBA shipment → PSI must include labeling, carton marks, poly-bag warnings, and dimension/weight spot checks.
  • Tight sailing date → book PSI early enough for rework or air-freight decisions.

FAQ

Is DPI the same as inline inspection?

Often used interchangeably. DPI is a scheduled mid-production visit with a defined checklist and sample plan, not informal line walking.

Can one man-day cover both?

Usually no. They happen on different dates. Large factories or multi-SKU lots may need more than one man-day each.

Where do reports go?

English reports are typically delivered in about 24 hours after the on-site visit, with photos and defect counts.
