Two of those checks are worth more than the other six. Steel gauge and weld quality are the two places where a substitution survives visual inspection, and both are measurable with a tool that fits in a jacket pocket.
๐ One container, one afternoon of tape work
September, a 1,900-frame order of platform bed frames from Ningbo โ FOB $38.50, about $73,150. Drawing a 125-frame sample under AQL 2.5 Level II, the inspector found nine frames with 0.72 mm side rails against a 1.00 mm sample, seven centre support legs with weld spatter and two that moved under a 120 kg load, five decks with slats rolling 25 mm sideways on a corner load, six cartons short a hardware bag, four cartons with bent rails, and three frames at 41โ45 ยตm of coating.
The fix stayed at the factory: 260 rails replaced, 40 centre legs re-welded, six cartons rebuilt, coating re-measured across 120 frames. Three days and about $2,400, with a re-inspection at 1.2% majors. ๐งญ The compliance boundary worth knowing
Three US rules get mixed into bed-frame conversations, and two of them do not apply to a platform frame. 16 CFR 1213 (entrapment hazards in bunk beds, source 64 FR 71899) and 16 CFR 1513 (bunk bed requirements โ guardrail gaps must not exceed 0.22 in / 5.6 mm) apply to bunk beds. If your supplier builds both, ask which line your frames came off, because the bunk-bed tooling is not the platform-frame tooling.
The STURDY standard for clothing storage units, 16 CFR 1261, does not cover bed frames either โ for a platform frame, stability is a returns-and-reviews issue rather than a compliance one. What does apply, if the frame uses a composite wood headboard or plywood slats, is TSCA Title VI under 40 CFR 770: 0.05 ppm for hardwood plywood, 0.09 ppm particleboard, 0.11 ppm MDF, 0.13 ppm thin MDF, tested under ASTM E1333-14. That means panel labels and a traceable TPC number on the parts you actually receive โ not on a certificate PDF from the sales office.
