Why China QC reports go ON-HOLD more than FAIL: findings from CloudSpects digitized reports
Direct answer: CloudSpects runs on the order of ~10,000 China inspections a year. For this article we deep-read every digitized QC report in our system that already has a final overall result (n=109 as of 2026-09-07)—a full digital cross-section, not a random draw from the annual volume. In that set, 52.3% were ON-HOLD, 39.4% PASS, and only 8.3% FAIL. Most friction sits in fixable sections—especially shipping marks (43.9% hold) and packing (32.4% hold)—before goods leave China.
If you only track “pass vs fail,” you miss the real story inside China inspection paperwork. CloudSpects inspectors score each report section as P (pass), H (on-hold), or F (fail). We aggregated those codes—plus overall outcomes, AQL found-vs-allowed counts, and defect line items—into an anonymized study. No factory names, customer names, or order IDs are published.
Methodology
- Annual volume context: CloudSpects’ China inspection throughput is about 10,000 jobs per year (business operating volume, including visits not yet fully mirrored as research-ready digital rows).
- What this study analyzes: a full cross-section of digitized
qc_reportsjoined toordersthat already carry a non-emptyoverall_result(n=109, snapshot 2026-09-07). We did not subsample from the annual 10,000; we coded every complete digital record available for outcome research. - Mix in this digital set: 103 pre-shipment (PSI), 4 factory inspection, 2 during production.
- Lot size: median order quantity 2,100 units.
- Amazon prep layer: 93 generated Amazon checklist PDF files on disk (parallel FBA checklist workflow).
- Privacy: only aggregates and English defect stems (damage, dirt, thread ends, scratches). Identifiers stripped. Defect phrases originally logged in multiple languages were normalized to English for this public article.
Treat the ~10,000 figure as annual operating scale; treat the percentages below as exact counts from the digitized complete-report cohort (n=109). Directional evidence for importers and Amazon sellers—not a random census of every China factory.
Finding 1 — ON-HOLD is the majority outcome
| Overall result | Count | Share |
|---|---|---|
| ON-HOLD | 57 | 52.3% |
| PASS | 43 | 39.4% |
| FAIL | 9 | 8.3% |
Interpretation for buyers: most stopped shipments are recoverable. ON-HOLD usually means “do not release until X is corrected,” not “scrap the lot.” If your SOP only escalates FAIL, you under-react to the majority risk class.
Finding 2 — Shipping marks & packing hold more than workmanship
Section rates below use scored P/H/F rows (N/A excluded from the percentage denominator).
| Section | Hold % | Fail % | Hold or fail % |
|---|---|---|---|
| Shipping marks | 43.9% | 0.9% | 44.9% |
| Packing | 32.4% | 0.0% | 32.4% |
| Measurements | 31.2% | 0.0% | 31.2% |
| Color & style | 30.3% | 0.0% | 30.3% |
| Quantity | 23.9% | 0.9% | 24.8% |
| Labeling | 17.3% | 1.9% | 19.2% |
| On-site tests | 15.6% | 0.9% | 16.5% |
| Data measurement | 13.1% | 0.0% | 13.1% |
| Workmanship | 5.5% | 5.5% | 11.0% |
| Barcode | 6.6% | 0.0% | 6.6% |
Workmanship is not “fine.” It simply fails differently: when it breaks, inspectors more often mark F instead of H. Cosmetic and finish problems still dominate the defect log (see Finding 4). Packaging and marks, by contrast, create shipment delays even when the product itself is sellable.
For Amazon inbound risk, that maps cleanly to carton marks, packing strength, poly-bag warnings, and label placement—see our FBA inbound reject checklist and the money page for Amazon FBA inspection China.
Finding 3 — AQL minors exceed limits more often than majors
- Average defects found per report: 1.46 major, 6.62 minor, 0 critical.
- Share of reports where found > allowed: major 6.4%, minor 17.4%, critical 0%.
Minors pile up (dirt, thread ends, light scratches). Majors are less frequent but decisive. Use the free AQL calculator to set sample size before the visit, and keep service scope clear on AQL inspection China.
Finding 4 — Top logged defect stems (English-normalized)
Highest-weighted defect phrases in qc_report_defects, normalized to English for publication:
| Stem (English) | Major units logged | Minor units logged |
|---|---|---|
| Damage / breakage | 29 | 0 |
| Dirt / dirty mark / stain | 6 | 103+ |
| Untrimmed thread ends | 0 | 128+ |
| Scratch marks | 3 | 56+ |
| Broken / skipped stitches | 16 | 1 |
| Bubbles / flash / burr / rough edge | ~7 | ~65 |
| Print defect | 0 | 15 |
Factory coaching that only chases “function fail” will miss the dirt/thread/scratch pile that burns rework days—and still leave shipping-mark holds untouched.
Practical checklist before your next China shipment
- Confirm carton shipping marks against the booking / ASN before final packing photos.
- Treat packing as a scored section: poly bags, tape, edge crush, mixed SKU cartons.
- Lock golden sample for color/style; measurement holds were 31.2% in this set.
- Run labeling + barcode scan checks even when workmanship looks clean.
- Decide in advance: ON-HOLD → rework window vs sail date vs air freight.
CloudSpects standard PSI / DPI / audit / loading days start from $169/man-day, with English reports typically in about 24 hours. Compare timing on PSI vs DPI if you are still choosing when to book.
FAQ
Is ON-HOLD worse than FAIL?
Not usually. FAIL more often means AQL or critical product criteria were breached. ON-HOLD means release is blocked until documented issues are cleared—often marks, packing, measurements, or color.
Does this replace a full Amazon FBA prep audit?
No. It shows where CloudSpects reports actually stop. Pair it with an FBA-oriented checklist on the same visit. Start from the Amazon FBA inspection China service page or pre-shipment inspection China.
Will you publish the raw report files?
No. Raw PDFs contain customer and factory data. Only anonymized aggregates are public.
